Simone’s Journey to Health – where it all began
If you haven’t heard of Simone’s Journey To Health, prepare to be inspired by this seriously impressive young woman. On August 29th 2014, freelance makeup artist Simone Anderson made the decision to change her lifestyle, lose weight and focus on her health. And not just a little bit of weight – a lot. She started out at 169 kilograms and aimed to reach a goal weight of 84.5 kilograms.
Simonet’s journey to health began with a major op – gastric sleeve surgery – and as a result, Simone had to change everything about the amount and type of foods she ate in order to recover from surgery in the safest and fastest way. Simone also incorporated as much exercise in her week as she can so she can build muscle and get as fit and healthy as possible. With humour, determination, a sense of fun and a freaking incredible dress sense, Simone has diarised her journey in Facebook posts – the foods she eats, the best recipes, what she learns along the way, how she stays on track and no less importantly – her new wardrobe to go along with her new look. Simone’s Journey To Health is one of the most inspiring things on Facebook and her posts have motivated me to both eat better and live more. What an amazing young woman. So I had to find out about her favourite products and ask her how she feels about being so ‘open’ about her journey on the internet.
What skin care products do you use every day? The skin care products I use daily are an exfoliator, face cleanser and a moisturiser all by MAC. Do you have a specific skin care regimen with one range or do you mix up your products? Do you indulge in regular treatments? I keep my skin care very regular doing all three steps daily, and never switch up my products anymore. I have found what works best for me and I’m not going to test my skin by trying other products! I get a facial once a year as a treat (I wish I could afford it more regularly) and I get a mani/pedi fortnightly.
You’re a makeup artist and hair stylist, so you’ve tried a tonne of products. Which cosmetics and hair products do you pack for a weekend away? If I was to stick to a few products for a weekend away for my hair it would be RUSK deep shine and Shimmer spray by Kevin Murphy these make your hair look and feel so incredible – I couldn’t live with out them. As for makeup it would be my brow gel, mascara and a tinted moisturiser all by MAC.
What are the ‘go-to’ essentials that live at the bottom of your handbag? During the week I try to stay makeup free so my go to product in my bag is Lucas Pawpaw ointment – no one likes dry lips!
What’s your favourite feature? My eyes are my favourite feature, so I always try to accentuate them with bold makeup and dramatic lashes. You seem at ease posting pictures of yourself on your blog – to show your weight loss progress and also without makeup. Yet we live in a world of ‘filters’ where people promote artifice not reality… Was it hard for you to be so ‘raw’? Yes it has become far easier to post “no makeup selfies” and pictures in my bra and undies showing my progress as time has gone on. When I decided to start my weight loss page it took me four days of tears and self doubt as to whether to post my first photo in my bra. But once I had put it out there I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and now it’s just second nature to post natural photos and I don’t even think twice about it. What’s the most important change in yourself or what have you learned about yourself since you began your weight loss journey? My most important lesson I have taught myself is that at each and every stage of your life you need to love and appreciate the “right now” and to try not to think next week, or to think ‘Once I lose 2 more kilos I will be happy.’ Instead learn to love yourself at every stage of your journey and realise just how far you have come and how far you still have to go. Progress and self improvement will never just be completed – there will always be bigger and better goals and achievements to work towards!
