I have always loved perfume. But, as with my skin care, I do prefer to lean towards mostly natural products. As someone who reads the back of every food and cosmetic product to know what I am using, it makes me a tad uneasy that I can’t read the ingredients list on popular perfumes. I do have a collection of fragrances I love, which I spray on my clothing rather than on my skin, but for direct skin application, I prefer to stick to natural products.
I was thrilled when Maria of Brisbane based perfume house Van der Faun contacted me to offer a sample to try. Maria explained that Van Der Faun’s mission is to give consumers a healthy alternative to fragrance. “We want people to know they don’t have to choose between luxury scents (and smelling amazing) and using a health-conscious option, which is why we created something that is not only 100% luxurious and beautiful but also 100% organic.”
I was sent Van der Faun Hummingbird to try, which the company describes as a ‘light, sweet and flirtatious scent for the ethereal woman’. Sounds a bit of me. And there’s nothing to hide here – the ingredient list is: Organic Sugar Cane Ethanol, Rose , Honeysuckle, Geranium , Bergamot , Palmarosa , Amyris , Patchouli.
The verdict: Hummingbird is actually a very powerful scent and as an eau de parfum I was impressed that it really lasts all day. I’m not a huge fan of patchouli as I personally find it a little strong for me, but after these notes soften, the scent develops into a beautiful warm bouquet of rose, honeysuckle and geranium. It’s actually quite sexy – it’s certainly not your grandmother’s powdery floral that’s for sure. I like to apply this a little before I go out, so it has a chance to warm on the skin. The sample sizes are very generous, so that’s a good way to start if you’re not sure if it’s for you. Visit Van der Faun for more info or to purchase.
