I know I have said before that I am not a huge fan of exfoliating. And that’s true. I prefer the skin to shed cells naturally, by encouraging this turnover through vitamin A based products. However, even I can admit that from time to time – before a facial, after a weekend of repeated sunblock application, or during that time of the month – a little exfoliation seems to be just what my skin needs. And with that said, here are my all-time favourites – some are new, some are old, but all are fan-bloody-tastic and you can trust me on that. You will also notice they are all non-manual. Enzymes and chemical based exfoliants are the go ladies; stay away from gritty exfoliants that can cause microscopic tears on the skin. The one exception is jojoba beads. They are super gentle and a light touch won’t damage your pretty face.
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
I have loved this magical white powder for years. It’s so gentle, it’s fine for use on all skin types. Basically, it’s a rice-based powder formula, which activates upon contact with water, releasing papain, salicylic acid and rice enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead skin cells, and after massaging it gently into your skin I assure you your skin will look smoother and brighter. But that’s not all folks, it will also help diminish blackheads and blocked pores. Plus it contains Dermalogica’s Skin Brightening Complex to balance uneven skin pigmentation and a super-soothing blend of Green Tea, Ginkgo and Colloidal Oatmeal helps to calm the skin, leaving it extraordinarily clear and refreshed. It is wondrous. Get your hands on some through the Dermalogica website. It’s just $25 for a trial size and you only need a teeny amount.
Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment
This multi-tasker is a brightening, radiance treatment serum and mask. The ingredients are designed to help restore damaged skin, reduce hyperpigmentation and scars, reduce the depth and number of lines and wrinkles, even skin-tone, and increase firmness. You can pop it on at night under your moisturizer for an overnight boost or apply a thicker layer as a mask and remove it after ten minutes. Featuring lactic acid to hydrate while exfoliating the skin to reduce the appearance of lines, liquorice to combat uneven skin tone, lemongrass to improve circulation and protect from environmental aggressors and Sunday’s patented NV-5 Ageless Complex to wage war on the early signs of aging. This makes my skin feel incredibly soft and smooth after just one treatment. It’s active, so not for nightly use for my fine skin type, but it does what it says and what’s not to love about that?! It costs $148 from Mecca Cosmetica.
It smells and looks like cherry jam but it’s more than just an innocent sweet treat. This mild exfoliating mask gives the skin a smooth, healthy appearance with each application through the use of cranberry enzymes with small amounts of L-lactic Acid. It contains 1% of the potent antioxidant CoQ10 to protect the skin. Using gentle enzymes, Polish only removes the epidermal layers by primarily cleaving protein (keratin) and minimizing lipid removal. I like to use it every week prior to a mask for a special treat. I know that it is gentle – because Osmosis are not huge advocates of exfoliation – but it does give you that satisfying ‘deep clean’ feeling that is wonderful as a Sunday pampering session to give your skin a gorgeous glow.
Go To Exfoliating Swipeys
These single-use cotton facial pads are soaked an all-natural solution that exfoliates and hydrates the skin. A combination of lactic acid (the most gentle of all AHAs) with ultra-hydrating essential oils to thoroughly remove dead skin cells (the cause of dull skin and congestion), refine skin texture, minimise the appearance of fine lines and deeply moisturise. These are so easy to use. Just pull one from the tub and swipe it over your skin and voila, you’re done. It’s a quick and easy way to prep the skin before a skin treatment, or use when you want to boost your glow. For more info visit the Go To website.
Oasis Tropical Fruit Smoothie
I do love a fruit smoothie and while I wouldn’t suggest licking this one, it sure is fabulous for your skin. It’s a little like a three-in-one as it is a physical exfoliator, enzymatic exfoliator and a smoothing masque. Jojoba beads gently exfoliate, while a combination of papaya and pineapple enzymes gently smooth away rough, dry dead skin cells. Then let the natural clays work their magic to calm and cool the skin. It contains no colour, fragrance, parabens and is cruelty free. Boom! It really does make your skin look so healthy and fresh and it works a treat on sensitive skin too. It’s just $39 and is available from Oasis Beauty website.
