I have never had dry skin on my face, but I was recently plagued by sore, tight, itchy dry skin that got to the point of mild dermatitis on my hands. The nasty anti-bacterial soap in the office where I work wreaks havoc with my skin and not only did I look like I had crocodile skin, it was pretty damned sore too.
I have a range of products that have come to the rescue – in part thanks to all of you giving me your wonderful feedback on products you have tried and love. I’m going to list all of my favourite products so you can pick and choose according to your budget or ethical reasons.
Firstly, I needed to eradicate the antibacterial soap problem so I bought Dr Bronner’s Rose Liquid Soap and keep it in the bathroom, sprinkling 3 drops onto wet hands and using that instead. Problem solved almost instantly. What seriously amazing stuff this is.
Next, I wanted to beef up my daily moisturising.
In the shower I have switched to a creamy body wash, so I use Dr Hauschka Soothing Body Wash and after patting dry I use a moisturiser religiously. I like to use PCA Skin Body Lotion during the day ass it contains 12% Lactic Acid to exfoliate dry patches while simultaneously upping moisture levels. Dr Hauschka Ice Plant Body Lotion is also phenomenal as a body moisturiser. Neither of these moisturisers leave the skin greasy, so they are lovely before getting dressed for the day.
Every night I massage my body with oil. It’s great for the skin but also massaging your breasts apparently helps prevent breast cancer, so I use a 100% natural oil for this. I love The Aroma Room Intimacy Body Oil as it is deliciously nourishing and sensuously scented withessential oils of Rose Absolute, Bergamot, Rosewood, Ylang Ylang, Benzoin, Grapefruit and Sandalwood. In a pinch 100% pure coconut oil is also perfect.
For regular doses of moisture to keep my hands in condition, I keep Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion at my desk and use it religiously – every single time I was my hands in the office. It has helped my hands tremendously and I love that it is a big pump bottle. It’s super economical and great to have at my desk. This is also a good one to use over the whole body when I want something that is super gentle and calming and without scent. It’s good if I am itchy from dry body brushing as well.
Another option is to use Prana Skin Remedy & Sanitiser as an antibacterial product instead of those awful drying gels. This is 100% natural formula actually helped to heal my dry skin, so I can see this becoming a new must-have. I carry a bottle around with me in my handbag for instant hand sanitation and to mist on my face and breathe in if people around me are coughing and spluttering. In my head I figure it is killing any bacteria that I have breathed in, but I am a kook. 😉 That said, also haven’t been sick this winter, so maybe my kookiness is paying off.
I’m also quite taken with Comvita Medihoney Natural Skintensive Cream, $19 which is an intensively hydrating formula with medical grade honey, which is very healing. It is fragrance free and pH balanced and is suitable for eczema skin conditions.
Hopefully that gives you a few ideas if your skin is playing up. Let me know if you try any of these products and what you think.
