For a softer take on a smokey eye this season, Clarins Autumn Colour Collection Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in ‘Forest’, $87 is a simply gorgeous pick. Naturally the shadows are beautifully set in Clarins’ signature gold compact which I find oh-so-appealing for the beauty bag, but it is the delectable shades within that make this limited edition set a true winner for me. Each shade in this quad can be used wet or dry to achieve varied intensity and they are subtle – not too gaudy or shimmery, which I’m slightly saddened to admit feels a little childish now that I am in my dirty 30s. Because all the shades have a different finish you really can use your imagination to play up your eyes in a multitude of ways. What’s more, the warmth of these shades result in a much softer and more flattering effect on blue eyes, or anyone whose lids are not quite as perky and smooth as they once were.
If you’re not an expert makeup artist, you may also appreciate that, while they can be applied wet for dramatic effect, when used with a dry brush these shades are a beautiful soft wash of colour that can easily be built with layering to create medium intensity looks.
Definitely worth a visit to a Clarins counter if you’re in the market for a smokey eye this season.
