A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting the lady behind art a face, a boutique range of New Zealand made natural skincare. Ros Torrance (who has gorgeous plump, healthy looking skin by the way) saw a niche in the skin care market for a simple range which combines the latest technological advances with plant and marine botanicals. As a former makeup artist, she had realised how bewildered women were by the sheer volume of skin care options available and felt that the number of products was more about marketing gimmick than quality products. A lot of her clients were barely using anything to care for their skin because they didn’t know what to use and when!
art a face Skin Science was developed 12 years ago and has been recommended by many dermatologists, appearance medicine specialists and cosmetic surgeons since. The essence of the brand is that the products treat skin concerns not skin types and skin ages. This allows for a concise range of products that can be used as and when you need for the skin changes that occur over time and as a result of hormonal changes. Ros explains, “Our products are designed to rebuild and healing damaged tissue using pure New Zealand bovine colostrum. The potent formulations dramatically firm, oxygenate and hydrate skin while addressing sensitivity and post surgical trauma. They are also paraben free as this synthetic preservative is a concern for a lot of women.”
The art a face Skin Science range can be used on everyone – all ages and skin types and it is safe for pregnant and lactating women. However it is deemed particularly beneficial for sensitive skins and those who have undergone collagen or botox treatments, cosmetic surgery and laser resurfacing. In fact, Ros says that some cosmetic surgeons get their patients on the regime prior to surgery, in order to strengthen and condition the skin so that it may recover faster.
Colostrum – the star ingredient
Colostrum is defined as the first single milking after a mammal is born. This first milking is full of rich nutrients, as well as immune and growth factors that are vital for an offspring’s survival, health and wellbeing. Scientific research reveals that dairy colostrum is four times richer in immune and growth-boosting factors than human colostrum. Research also indicates that colostrum is one of the most natural skin regenerators for human skin, based on its concentration of rich nutrients.
The first product I used in the range was the Intense Hydrating Mask and was blown away by it as it is one of the few masks I have tried that makes an instant – and profound – difference to the hydration of my skin. I was keen to try more of the range and colostrum was something I had heard about, but not really considered as part of a skin care regime. So, for two weeks I have religiously used the Rejuvenating Overnight Cream, All Day Protection plus SPF15 and the Moisture Boost Eye Cream. The textures of each of the creams are pretty phenomenal and I truly love applying them – each feels rich and creamy, yet non greasy. They absorb beautifully and the day cream works wonderfully as a makeup base. I still would prefer to use a higher SPF product, but if I am going outside I just use an SPF30+ over the top. My skin seems to literally ‘drink up’ the creams and I can honestly say my skin looks and feels fresher and more ‘glowy’ since trialling the range. I adore that the scents are very mild and natural as I cannot stand heavily perfumed products. The range seems to keep breakouts at bay and even heal the existing stubborn blemishes around my hair line and jaw – which have been a painful reminder of why I am not yet ‘friends’ with retinol. I’m wearing less makeup. A dash of concealer or BB cream is all I really need to look even and fresh. I have not noticed a reduction in fine lines, but it’s only been two weeks so would not expect that. My skin feels more balanced – less dryness and more normal skin which is a nice change. I have had no negative reactions to the range whatsoever. If your skin is sensitive or you are looking for a small but beautifully formed collection of products, I recommend giving art a face a go.
